A short drive north of Sylvan Lake, Medicine Lodge Ski Club offers the occasional powder day along with runs for beginner and more advanced riders.

Unlike most prairie ski areas that are located in river valleys, Medicine Lodge Ski Club is on an actual hill.

Steeper runs at Medicine Lodge Ski Club

I have to admit that it took us a couple of years of living in Red Deer before we skied Medicine Lodge. We headed out during the Christmas holidays a few years ago when our oldest was just starting on skis and we’ve been going back whenever we get a weekend day off ever since.

Medicine Lodge is a nonprofit, volunteer run ski club with a family atmosphere reminiscent of the ski areas of yesteryear. As soon as you arrive you’ll notice that things there are different than at most resort we’re now accustomed to. There are no chairlift, magic carpet, snowmaking or fancy lodge. What you’ll find is some great skiing at a very reasonable price.

Getting Started

For those just getting started, the lower part of the hill offers rolling terrain that’s perfect for beginners. The new handle tow services this area, allowing you to skip the t-bar.

Once you’re ready to tackle the upper part of the t-bar you’ll find amazing views of the prairies, all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Head down Pipeline or Maskepetoon to make it back to the base.

Looking for More

Medicine Lodge relies 100% on natural snow. You should expect some thin spots, especially in early season. But don’t let that stop you from having a great day. Because they’re closed during the week, your can expect to find powder days after a storm on Rude Awakening or Wild West. If they’re groomed Main Event and Steepest Inc make for some great cruisers.
